SHAPe Scholars

SHAPe Scholars

The SHAPe initiative aims to expand and strengthen the contribution of South African investigators to HIV vaccine research through a structured research, mentorship and PhD program. SHAPe seeks to build research capacity by helping to develop and foster the careers of early stage investigators (ESIs) interested in clinical trials, laboratory and epidemiological research that support preventive HIV vaccine development.

SHAPe identifies, supports and works toward retaining young clinicians interested in a career in HIV research. Working closely with established South African HIV vaccine researchers, ESIs identify research questions addressing priorities of the HVTN scientific agenda, and design novel research to conduct within the framework and support of an HIV vaccine research unit.

Funding and Support

Scholars receive mentoring and 36 months of funding including salary, research-related costs and participation in career development activities. Support may also be available to cover Ph.D. program fees.
This program is supported by the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, with funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).
